Düwel — Runenkunde (Sammlung Metzler 72): the standard German handbook of Germanic runology

Summary

The standard German-language textbook-cum-reference on runology in the Sammlung Metzler series. It covers the Germanic runic traditions (the Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, the Younger Futhark, the medieval runes), the corpus of inscriptions, the methodology of dating and reading, and the question of runic “magic” from an academic standpoint. Reissued many times; the 5th edition (2023, with R. Nedoma) is the most current.

Quality of evidence

An academic standard (a peer-reviewed scholarly publisher, large-print runs across many editions). German is the working language of Germanistic runology.
