Blaze et al. — Encyclopedia of Divination (Runes section, 2000): summary of a popular esoteric guide with spreads
⚠️ SOURCE STATUS. This is a mass-market esoteric compilation from the late 20th century (OLMA-PRESS, 2000) — a popular guide, not academic runology and not a primary text of the tradition. The authors give no sources or attributions. Therefore: all method and spreads =
practice-instruction(modern divinatory practice); all rune meanings =revival-claim(constructed 20th-c. readings); any references to "ancient Germanic peoples / druids" = pseudohistory, flagged separately below. This is a source of material for one's own spreads, not evidence of antiquity. Echoes of Thorsson — Futhark (1984) and thecritiquesection — see "Links."
Summary
The Runes section (book pp. 227–290, ~64 pp.) of a popular divination encyclopedia: divination on the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark plus the "Blank rune" (an empty rune — an invention of R. Blum, 1982; presented in the book as a full-fledged 25th sign). Structure of the section:
- Introduction (229–230) — what runes are + the everyday ritual conduct of the diviner.
- "Variants of divination" (231–234) — 5 spreads/schemes (the core for our task).
- The divinatory content of the 24 runes (235–277) — a dictionary: glyph + extended prose + "Upright / Reversed position" + "Key concept."
- "Brief meaning of the runes" (278–280) — a condensed table of both positions (see below).
- "Magical operations with runes" (281–290) — rune magic (not divination): general rules + the application of each rune. Useful for the runescript track (Module 6 — Assembling the runescript).
The order and names of the runes (as the book transliterates them, the classic Elder Futhark):
- Fehu · 2. Uruz · 3. Thurisaz · 4. Ansuz · 5. Raido · 6. Kano · 7. Gebo · 8. Wunjo ·
- Hagalaz · 10. Nauthiz · 11. Isa · 12. Jera · 13. Eihwaz · 14. Perth · 15. Algiz ·
- Sowilo · 17. Tiwaz · 18. Berkana · 19. Ehwaz · 20. Mannaz · 21. Laguz · 22. Ingwaz ·
- Othala · 24. Dagaz · (25.) the Blank rune.
Key claims (with honesty flags)
practice-instructionA rune is drawn from a pouch "without looking"; the upright or reversed position is taken into account, and the answer depends heavily on it. — p. 231.revival-claimThe "upright/reversed" system for rune meanings — a modern (Blumian) practice; historically, runic epigraphy has nothing of the sort.revival-claimThe "Blank rune" = God's will / karma / the predetermined. — pp. 280, 290. The empty rune is Blum's innovation (1982), not tradition. See thecritiquesection.- ⚠️ [pseudohistory] "The runic signs are of the most ancient origin — they go back to the magical symbols of the Celtic druid-priests, from whom they passed to the Germanic peoples." — p. 229. Not confirmed: runes are a Germanic script (≈ 1st–2nd c. CE, a likely adaptation of the Italic/Latin alphabets); the "druidic" pedigree is a popular myth. Cross-check with the overview of rune magic from inscriptions.
- ⚠️ [pseudohistory] "Zodiacal divination of the ancient Germanic peoples" (24 runes ↔ 12 zodiac signs + 12 astrological houses). — pp. 233–234. The very name is a false attribution: linking runes to the zodiac/houses is a 20th-c. astrological overlay, not attested among the ancient Germanic peoples.
practice-instructionDivination on a single rune is "the clearest"; multi-rune spreads are given as an option. The main thing is to choose a spread that "answers" to you personally. — p. 231.
Spreads (schemes) — the core for creating new divinations
1. Basic variant (1 rune)
Formulate the question (to learn about a situation or to ask advice of the "Higher Powers"), relax, focus on the question, draw one rune without looking, note its upright/reversed position, read the meaning. The book considers single-rune divination the clearest (there is no "extra noise").
2. Spread of 3 runes — method 1 (on the situation)
First formulate the theme (don't mix two themes in one question). Draw 3 runes one at a time and lay them out in a row from right to left:
[ 3 ] [ 2 ] [ 1 ] ← lay out right to left (the first one is the rightmost)
│ │ └─ 1: the essence of the situation as it stands
│ └─────── 2: the direction of action required of you
└───────────── 3: the situation that will follow the present one
3. Spread of 3 runes — method 2 (on the person)
The same right-to-left layout, but the focus is on yourself:
[ 3 ] [ 2 ] [ 1 ]
│ │ └─ 1: you, right now
│ └─────── 2: the challenge that fate throws at you
└───────────── 3: the best possible resolution — a benchmark
to strive toward (and not to expect more than that)
4. The "Fate" spread (6 runes)
The book attributes it to "well-known researchers of occult systems" (without names —
[unverified]). Draw 6 runes, lay them out face down, then turn them over in the
order in which they were drawn. The geometry is a cross:
[ 6 ]
[ 3 ] [ 5 ] [ 1 ]
[ 2 ]
[ 4 ]
- 1 — the past
- 2 — the person the divination is about (yourself, if about you)
- 3 — a characterization of the personality at the present moment
- 4 — the "foundation": the roots of the situation/state
- 5 — the action expected of you; the task that needs to be solved
- 6 — the final result: what awaits if you solve this task
5. "Zodiacal divination of the ancient Germanic peoples" (24/25 runes) — ⚠️ false attribution
The 24 runes are laid out in a circle in pairs, face down, and interpreted by the 12 signs of the zodiac and the 12 astrological houses. The "Blank" rune may be excluded; if it is not excluded, the last (25th) is placed in the center as the summation of the whole divination. You begin with the sign under which the person was born (Aries / the 1st house — in the rightmost or leftmost position), the rest going counterclockwise. The themes of the 12 sectors:
| # | Sign / house | Sphere |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Aries | personality, natural inclinations, heredity, character |
| 2 | Taurus | source of income, kinds of expenditure |
| 3 | Gemini | relatives, friends, short journeys |
| 4 | Cancer | home, family, marriage, father |
| 5 | Leo | children, art, pleasures |
| 6 | Virgo | illnesses, everyday cares |
| 7 | Libra | partner, marriage, ties, family |
| 8 | Scorpio | physical death, sex, occult abilities |
| 9 | Sagittarius | religiosity, philosophical convictions, long journeys |
| 10 | Capricorn | career, professional success, mother |
| 11 | Aquarius | the fulfillment of hopes |
| 12 | Pisces | secret ties, illnesses, occult pursuits, karma |
The divinatory meanings of the 24 runes + the Blank rune
revival-claim — the condensed "Brief meaning of the runes" table (book pp. 278–280).
For symmetrical glyphs the book gives one meaning (there is no reversed) — a dash.

The full extended prose for each rune (the rationale, the "Higher Powers' advice" for the upright/reversed) is in the PDF, book pp. 235–277. Reduced here is the "down-to-earth" summary that the book itself offers as the working one for spreads.
Magical operations with runes (for the runescript track)
practice-instruction / revival-claim. Book pp. 281–290. This is rune magic, not
divination. Raw material for the runescript overview / Module 6 — Assembling the runescript.
General rules (281–282):
- Inscribe on natural materials (wood, clay, metal, stone); pencil on paper is permissible, but the effect is short-lived. Talismans/amulets — from natural materials.
- Work in complete solitude, without interference, preferably in the early morning before dawn; calm and concentration are needed (agitation/stress weaken the effect).
- While working: clearly pronounce the rune's name and concentrate on its key concept.
- Inscribe only in the upright position — reversed signs are "too dangerous."
- After a session — a cleansing/grounding ritual (cold water, wash the hands, meditation or calm music).
- A talisman works as long as there is a need; renew it periodically; do not throw the "spent" one in the trash, but return it to the elements (burn it / bury it / into water).
- Protective charms — above the entrance/on the door jamb/on the door (one can do it "invisibly," with a finger in the air, but a carved/drawn one lasts longer). To strengthen — repeat the rune 2–3 times (no more).
- Caution for beginners: if the rune's meaning is not "felt" but only understood with the mind, it is better not to use it; if you doubt the effect on other people, don't do it.
Application by rune (282–290):
| # | Rune | Magical application (per the book) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fehu | Material prosperity; also affects relations between man and woman (the level of physical attraction) |
| 2 | Uruz | Personal power; the "yin/yang" balance — masculinity in men, femininity in women; friendship, love, marriage |
| 3 | Thurisaz | Strength for deliberation and the making of important decisions; don't postpone the "unresolved" |
| 4 | Ansuz | Communication skills, contacts; inspiration, creativity; awakens talents, sharpens the intellect; study/exams |
| 5 | Raido | The rune of the path: to smooth and shorten a journey; in a philosophical sense — support on the path of life |
| 6 | Kano | Very broad: to focus the will and bring a plan to life; conception/pregnancy; creative realization (an amulet of artists, craftsmen, priests, magicians); to look deep into oneself |
| 7 | Gebo | Partnership balancing freedom and closeness; marriage/business alliance; the harmonization of relationships; choosing a partner |
| 8 | Wunjo | To summon joy, delight, a surge of energy, well-being |
| 9 | Hagalaz | To break out of the "vicious circle" — recurring situations/relationships; to "blow up" the circle (for oneself or another) |
| 10 | Nauthiz | Support in difficult times; develops moderation, patience, restraint, thrift, sobriety, steadfastness |
| 11 | Isa | To "freeze" anything: to halt a process (anger, inflammation, pain — carefully, like an "anesthetic"); meditate on the sign, applying a finger/palm; aim the rune at the event, not at yourself |
| 12 | Jera | To successfully complete an important undertaking; inscribe on an amulet/object of the undertaking; it requires personal effort and energy |
| 13 | Eihwaz | Overcoming obstacles (sport, activity); frees one from needless fears; releases inner resources |
| 14 | Perth | A qualitative change of consciousness (the "death" of the old consciousness), the breaking of a closed chain of thoughts/events; tied to karma — apply with great caution |
| 15 | Algiz | Strengthens the ability to sense danger/attack, gives warning; a talisman; inscribe in the air at the sense of a threat |
| 16 | Sowilo | The wholeness of the personality or situation; to reconcile contradictions, to feel oneself a whole, strong person |
| 17 | Tiwaz | The warrior's rune: help in any struggle, especially with the "Chaos of one's own Self"; on a weapon / in the air before an undertaking — for resolve and courage |
| 18 | Berkana | Growth, fertility, the bearing of children; helps with infertility, childbirth, child-rearing; recovery |
| 19 | Ehwaz | Change, to "unfreeze" stagnation; "gives acceleration" to what is stuck; eases the way for travelers (especially by water) |
| 20 | Mannaz | Knowledge, wisdom, intellect, intuition; self-improvement; harmonious partnership and family relations |
| 21 | Laguz | The rune of intuition: to sharpen intuitive perception, occult pursuits; marriage/friendship/reconciliation; to feel who is "one's own" |
| 22 | Ingwaz | Tied to the god Freyr; a direct appeal to him; fertility (infertility, crop failure, problems at work); to relieve overstrain, to "breathe life in" |
| 23 | Othala | Property, material goods; practical sense; order in the home; respect/harmony in the family and with colleagues |
| 24 | Dagaz | The end of a "dark" period and the start of a "bright" one; a breakthrough in a stuck affair (getting off dead center); protracted/chronic illnesses |
| 25 | Blank rune | In magic it is not recommended to use — it is tied to karma; "conjuring" one's own karma is dangerous |
Quality of evidence
This is a primary source of practice, not testimony. There are no sources or attributions; a number of claims about origin are pseudohistorical (druids→Germanic peoples; "zodiacal divination of the ancient Germanic peoples"). The rune interpretations are the authorial constructions of late-20th-c. compilers, overlapping with the Blumian-esoteric line (upright/reversed, the empty rune). The effectiveness of divination/magic is not discussed critically in the book — we take it as material, not as fact. There are no controlled studies (see Mechanisms — attention, placebo, ritual).
